What is Open Pedagogy?
Open-Pedagogy is all about involving students in their learning. The University of Texas Library defines OP as: “the practice of engaging with students as creators of information rather than simply consumers of it. It’s a form of experiential learning in which students demonstrate understanding through the act of creation. The products of open pedagogy are student created and openly licensed so that they may live outside of the classroom in a way that has an impact on the greater community.”
Open PedaGogy Learning Outcomes
Students will learn the importance of remixing, remediating, and creating content for their fellow learners, paying close attention to their audience and purpose
Students will understand how creative commons licensing functions in an academic context
Students will evaluate course materials and curriculum in high impact ways, that is authentic and meaningful to their learning
Students will engage in experiential learning by actively creating or modifying resources within the class to improve future student learning
How Will This Impact The Class?
You’ll notice on our course syllabus a number of policies marked as “Open Policies.” These policies are ones that we will create together as a class based on voting for what changes you think could be made to them to help increase your learning in the course. Some of these policies include:
- Attendance
- Participation
- Extra Credit
- Late Work
- Class Decorum
Remember, these policies are designed to help you as a student with your learning in the course. Thus, giving voice to what policies you’d like to see in the class matters. I will send out emails and polls during various points in our semester to garner your feedback.
